My mother devoted her life to one cause - service of humanity through education. She worked tirelessly (right up until the very last week of her prolific life, well past her 90th birthday) to uplift, encourage and educate. We are committed to continuing that legacy.
To that end, I am announcing the formation of
The Bridget Nwankwo Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Our goal is simple: to offer scholarships to 9000 students annually in perpetuity. That represents a hundred students for every year she lived.
Just as a scholarship altered the path of a young girl from Ubakala, Umuahia, some 80+ years ago, and as a result impacted the lives of many of us here today, we owe it to her legacy to enable others get a fighting chance in life. We do not know where the next outstanding person would come from. But we can say that helping them get an education will benefit all of society, I can think of nothing else that would excite her more than knowing that young boys and girls are going to school in part because of the work she did in her lifetime.
I am requesting that you kindly join me in this endeavor.
Quoting from her will:
" I hereby request to be buried as follows: ..... That I be accorded a very SOLEMN and SIMPLE burial upon my demise in accordance with Christian (Anglican) Doctrine".
(The emphasis on the text above is a verbatim transcript, exactly as she mandated.) She did not ask for cooling vans or hot drinks, dry meat or dripping stew. She asked for "very solemn and simple". She will get it. I am committed to following the dictates of her will - to the letter.
But I know that nothing would bring her more joy than seeing hordes of young boys and girls, and throngs of motivated men and women (Bridget Nwankwo Scholars™) able to go to school (across schools in Nigeria) because WE got together to drive this endeavor on her behalf. If she could do it, she would have. We can...... in loving memory of a life well lived.
This scholarship fund will not only benefit the students in the schools she founded, but also those in the schools she attended, those in which she taught, and many more institutions that were near and dear to her. She lived education. Rather than being an impedance, her demise should be an opportunity to EXPAND the footprint of her contribution to humanity. We can do this.
To build a scholarship fund that runs in perpetuity requires the constitution of highly durable governance structures that would manage the affairs of the fund into the future. This is to ensure that it impacts as many people as possible by prudent management of the scholarship fund. I am committed to that goal, and I will post more information on those governance structures here (on this web site) as we make progress on that front. There are MANY people in her extended community who are more than capable of managing and growing this scholarship fund to serve future generations. In the days to come, I will be calling on some of you to help realize and advance this cause.
In the meantime, I am requesting that you kindly join me in this endeavor.
